Gerald Domenig (*1953 in Villach) ist Österreichischer Staatspreisträger für Künstlerische Fotografie 2021. Er studierte an der Kunstakademie Düsseldorf sowie an der Frankfurter Städelschule. Seit 1974 lebt und arbeitet Domenig in Frankfurt am Main, wo 2015 das MMK seine Arbeiten zeigte. Zur Ausstellung in der Wiener Secession 2016 erschien sein Künstlerbuch „Mittendrin ein Z“.
Die bevorzugten Medien des Künstlers sind die Fotografie, die Zeichnung und der Text.
Es wird eine Fotoausstellung geben, die zeigt, wo GD in Neumagen etwas gesehen hat, was in dem Moment unbedingt fotografiert werden sollte, z. B. die Peterskapelle, ein Detail am Haus Nr. 51 an der Römerstraße, eine Situation in der Spielesgasse und gleich mehrere Variationen einer Hofansicht Krischelsberg 11. Er wird versuchen, möglichst wenige Fotos auszustellen (im Kontrast zur Diashow am Eröffnungstag, zu mindestens 200 Dias, diese jedoch jeweils nur für einige Sekunden). Den Fotos aus Neumagen will er zwei drei in seiner alten Heimat gemachte (im Bezirk Hermagor in Kärnten, Österreich, daher „ostrisch“) gegenüberstellen.
Die Ausstellung findet im Rahmen des Programms ‚Ostwind‘ des Kultursommers 2022 Rheinland-Pfalz statt und wird gefördert von der Beauftragten der Bundesregierung für Kultur und Medien aus Mitteln des Programms Neustart Kultur des Bundesverbands Soziokultur.

Gerald Domenig (*1953 in Villach) has been awarded the Austrian State Prize for Artistic Photography in 2021. The artist studied at the Düsseldorf Art Academy and at Städelschule in Frankfurt/Main. Domenig is based in Frankfurt where he has been living and working since 1974. His work was shown at the MMK in a solo presentation in 2015. Gerald Domenigs artist book “Mittendrin ein Z” was published in 2016 for his exhibition at the Vienna Secession.
The artist’s preferred media are photography, drawing and text.
There will be a photo exhibition showing where GD saw something in Neumagen that should definitely be photographed at that very moment, e.g. the Peterskapelle, a detail of house no. 51 on Römerstraße, a situation in the Spielesgasse and several variations of a courtyard view at Krischelsberg 11. In his exhibition, the artist will attempt to exhibit as few photos as possible (in contrast to the extensive slide show presented on opening day, of at least 200 slides, each only for a few seconds, however). Domenig attempts to contrapose his Neumagen photos against two or three ones taken in his old homeland (in the district of Hermagor in Carinthia, Austria, hence “ostrisch”).
The exhibition takes place as part of the ‚Eastwind‘ program of the Rhineland-Palatinate 2022 cultural summer and is funded by the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and Media as part of the Restart Culture program of the German Federal Association of Socioculture.
